November 2006

American Education Week

Join educators all across the country November 12-18, 2006, to celebrate American Education Week. This year’s theme, Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility, highlights the importance of bringing together educators, school staff, parents, students, and communities in a unified effort to build great public schools. The theme also reflects NEA’s vision of calling upon America to provide students with quality public schools so that they can grow, prosper, and achieve in the 21 st century.

You can find more information about American Education Week at www.nea.org. Enjoy the ruler, compliments of the LMEA.

Imputed Income/Life Insurance

During the 05-10 contract, you may receive 2x your salary in life insurance. If 2x your salary is greater than $50,000, the IRS considers the premium paid by the District on the amount greater than $50,000 as imputed income.

It is important to understand that you pay taxes on the premium not the cost of the premium. For instance, if the premium costs the District $50.00, your cost is around $9.00. If you do not want the additional insurance and do not want to pay taxes for the additional premium, be sure to opt out during the open enrollment period in the spring.

Please remember that our contract guarantees that you receive $50,000 life insurance.

Accumulated Sick Days

The 05-10 contracts says that employees shall have accessibility to their number of accumulated sick days through KRONOS Employee Self-Service. Accruals can be accessed on KRONOS through the district website.

Higher Salary Scale for Credits

Article 29,30 and 31(I) describe placement on salary scale for credits. Do not assume that professional development promoted by the district counts toward salary credit advancement. If it is not explicitly stated, please inquire. There is no guarantee the district will grant you credit after the fact.
